A Dragon alternative for people who only use it to dictate.

Ceylo is a Dragon alternative for Windows users who dictate text and use little else of what Dragon does. Both recognize speech on the PC itself. Nuance lists an internet connection for Dragon Professional only to download and activate it1, while Ceylo Pro keeps working for 30 days between check-ins. They part ways on everything around the words: Dragon runs custom voice commands and macros that automate multi-step work2, while Ceylo has no voice commands and types only the words you say.

How do Ceylo and Dragon Professional compare?

Both are installed on the PC and recognize speech there once set up. Dragon is a voice-control system with dictation inside it; Ceylo is the dictation on its own, plus calls and recordings.

Which Dragon products does Nuance sell today?

Nuance's Dragon menu lists Dragon Professional, Dragon Legal, Dragon Law Enforcement, Dragon Professional Anywhere, Dragon Legal Anywhere and Dragon Anywhere Mobile2. No edition called NaturallySpeaking or Home appears in that menu. Dragon Professional v16 runs on Windows 11 and Windows 102. Nuance's Dragon Professional page shows no price and routes buyers to a Contact us button2. Many comparison pages quote a figure for Dragon Professional; this one does not, because Nuance's own pages do not state it.

Does Dragon need the internet?

Nuance lists an internet connection for Dragon Professional only to download and activate it1. Nuance also sells Dragon Professional Anywhere, a cloud-native edition1, so check which edition a quote or a review is about. Ceylo goes online to download a speech model and to activate a license, then for updates and licensing check-ins, and none of that traffic carries audio or text; Ceylo dictates with the internet off once its speech model has downloaded, and Ceylo Pro keeps working for 30 days without a connection.

What do you give up moving from Dragon to Ceylo?

More than a vendor page usually admits. Dragon's custom voice commands and macros2 do not come across, because Ceylo has none. Dragon learns the voice of the one person using it1, while Ceylo does not learn your voice and relies on your term list instead. A large vocabulary does not carry over whole either. Ceylo's term list accepts a pasted list, one term per line or separated by commas, but Ceylo hands your terms to the speech model in a short prompt with a fixed size limit, which holds dozens of names rather than thousands of words.

Can Ceylo transcribe recordings the way Dragon does?

Dragon transcribes recordings of a single speaker2. Ceylo Pro transcribes an audio or video file already on your disk, on the device, as a single speaker. Ceylo also covers a case Dragon's page does not describe: Ceylo Pro records a call from your PC on two labeled tracks, You and Participants, without naming individual speakers.

Where Dragon is the better choice

Dragon is a voice-control system with dictation inside it, and Ceylo replaces only the dictation. Stay with Dragon if any of these describes you:

  • You control Windows by voice. Dragon can run a whole PC hands-free, opening applications, navigating menus and placing the cursor by voice3. Ceylo cannot control Windows by voice.
  • Your work runs on commands and macros. Dragon has both2, and Ceylo has neither.
  • Your organization deploys dictation centrally. Dragon's Nuance Management Center deploys and manages Dragon centrally across an organization1. Ceylo has no admin console and no central deployment.
  • Dragon has already learned your voice. Dragon adapts to the one person using it1, while Ceylo starts from a general model and your term list.
  • Your PC goes online only to install software. Nuance lists the internet only for download and activation1, while Ceylo needs the internet to activate, then once more after 14 days for a one-time license to settle, or every 30 days for a subscription.
  • Your vocabulary runs to thousands of entries. Ceylo's term list reaches the speech model through a short, size-limited prompt.

Where Ceylo is the better choice

Ceylo is the better fit when Dragon is, in practice, a microphone that types:

  • You want to see the price before you buy. Ceylo Pro costs $8 a month, $79 a year, or $149 once, while Nuance lists no price2.
  • You record calls with other people in them. Ceylo Pro keeps both sides of a call, on two labeled tracks, where Dragon's transcription is for a single speaker2.
  • You would rather not learn a command language. With Ceylo there is nothing to memorize.

Which one should you pick?

One question decides most cases: do you speak to the computer, or only to the page?

  • Stay with Dragon if you run Windows hands-free3, depend on custom voice commands and macros2, deploy and manage it centrally1, or need a PC that connects only to download and activate1.
  • Switch to Ceylo if you dictate into documents, email and chat, use no commands, and want calls transcribed on the same PC.
  • If you are unsure, Ceylo gives each new computer 14 days of everything unlocked, which is enough to try it on your real work before deciding.
