A Superwhisper alternative for Windows, and when not to switch.

Ceylo is a Superwhisper alternative for Windows for one kind of buyer: someone who wants dictation from an app that offers no cloud models. For most other buyers, Superwhisper is hard to argue against. Superwhisper's free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, and nothing dictated on it leaves the device1. Superwhisper covers Macs, Windows PCs, an iPhone and an Android phone with one Pro license1. Ceylo's free plan gives 15 dictations a month and does not expire.

How do Ceylo and Superwhisper compare on Windows?

Closely on the basics, and apart on three things: where the speech model may run, what the free plan covers, and how far one license reaches beyond a single PC. Every Superwhisper cell is numbered to its source.

Does Superwhisper work offline on Windows?

Superwhisper's local models run on the device and need no internet4. The catch is hardware: Superwhisper's larger local models on Windows use the graphics card through Vulkan, and fall back to a much slower CPU path without it2. Superwhisper also offers cloud models, which it suggests when a PC is too slow for the local ones2, and that option is the real difference between the two apps. Ceylo runs locally too, so how quickly its text arrives also depends on your PC; Ceylo offers no cloud model to fall back on. Ceylo Pro keeps working for 30 days without a connection, after which a subscription, or a one-time license that has not settled yet, pauses Pro until its next check-in succeeds, with the free plan meanwhile.

What is still missing from Superwhisper on Windows?

Superwhisper's documentation lists a few features not on Windows yet, among them its coding-agent integrations and its command-line tool, and says everything else works the same as on macOS2. Neither gap is a reason to choose Ceylo, which has none of those things either: Ceylo has no API, no webhook and no command line.

How do the prices compare?

Superwhisper Pro costs $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or $249.99 once1. Ceylo Pro costs $8 a month, $79 a year, or $149 once. Ceylo costs less at each tier, and the gap is widest on the one-time license. That license works differently on each side. Ceylo's one-time license covers every 1.x update on three computers, and it settles at its first check-in at least 14 days after activation, and from then on keeps working offline on that computer indefinitely. Superwhisper says its one-time license keys never expire1, and it sets no device limit1.

Can either one transcribe a meeting or a file?

Both can, on their paid plans. Superwhisper Pro adds cloud models, AI modes, file transcription and speaker separation1. Ceylo Pro records a call from your PC on two labeled tracks, You and Participants, without naming individual speakers. Ceylo Pro transcribes an audio or video file already on your disk, on the device, as a single speaker. On a call with several people that difference matters, because Ceylo labels the two sides of the call rather than the people in it.

Where Superwhisper is the better choice

Superwhisper wins on more counts than it loses, and each of these should send you to it:

  • You want unlimited dictation without paying. Superwhisper's free plan has no cap on local dictation1; Ceylo's free plan stops at 15 a month.
  • You work on more than a Windows PC. One Superwhisper license also covers a Mac and a phone1; Ceylo is Windows only.
  • Your PC has an ARM processor. Superwhisper runs on ARM64 processors2; Ceylo ships one installer, built for x64.
  • You want the app to format or rewrite what you say. Superwhisper Pro has AI modes for that1; Ceylo types what you said.
  • Your organization needs a vendor's compliance paperwork. Superwhisper says it is SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliant4; Ceylo holds no security or compliance certification.
  • You want a one-time license for any number of computers. Superwhisper says its one-time license keys never expire1 and it sets no device limit1, while Ceylo covers three computers with one license.
  • You want longer to change your mind. Superwhisper refunds within 30 days3; Ceylo refunds any purchase within 14 days.

Where Ceylo is the better choice

Ceylo is the narrower product, and these are the buyers it is built for:

  • You want transcription on the PC from an app with no cloud model on offer. Ceylo has no cloud transcription at all, while Superwhisper offers cloud models alongside local ones2.
  • You want the lower price at every tier, which the table above sets out.
  • You want a trial measured in days rather than words. Ceylo gives each new computer 14 days of everything unlocked, where Superwhisper's trial is 3,000 words1.

Which one should you pick?

Decide on the few facts that actually differ:

  • Pick Superwhisper if you want unlimited local dictation without paying1, one license across a Mac, a Windows PC and a phone1, AI modes that format what you say1, or a vendor that says it is SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliant4, and pick it too if you dictate on a PC with an ARM64 processor2.
  • Pick Ceylo if you want an app that offers no cloud models, at a lower price at every tier.
  • If you already use Superwhisper's free plan1 and it does what you need, stay where you are.
